A Jordan of Firsts

A Jordan of Firsts

It would be difficult to encapsulate the sheer magnitude of the ambition of the people of Jordan; this is a part of our Kingdom’s intangible legacy. The pioneering spirit which resides within each of us is a bold one, it sees beyond the mundane, the accepted, the status quo. It resonates at the highest frequencies and seeks to manifest itself in the most exceptional ways.

Jordan has long been home to out-of-the-box thinkers, and the nurturing ecosystem that hosts them. It has led many pioneering efforts in the Arab world in the last several decades; Jordan was the first Arab state to enact a constitution all the way back in 1952, the first Arab country to issue female police officers, and the first Arab country to establish a national airline in 1963. In sports, we were the first Arab country to win the AFC Asian Cup in football, host a FIFA tournament (the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2016), and win an Olympic medal in taekwondo.

And the realm of technology has certainly been no exception—in fact, Jordan established its first tech fund all the way back in 1988. In this world of tech alone, the Kingdom boasts numerous other ‘firsts’: Jordan was the first Arab country to introduce mobile banking, the first MENA incubator was based in Jordan, and the first e-commerce platform was also established here, as well as the first Arabic language search engine, digital encyclopedia, and email service provider. Jordan was also the first Arab country to establish a technology park, the first mobile game studio in the Middle East, and had the first notable tech exit in the region (as well as one of the first tech IPOs).

Jordanian women are also breaking the proverbial glass ceiling—in fact, we were the first Arab country to have a female judge in its highest court. And our women have burst onto the tech stage, breaking all kinds of boundaries and stereotypes. Not only do they occupy a third of ICT jobs in Jordan, but women in the C-suite are transforming the world of tech from the top of the pyramid. And at 60% of all new hires, the trailblazing women of Jordan show that the future really belongs to them.

As the largest contributor of Arabic language content—a whopping three-quarter majority—the small Kingdom of Jordan is making some seriously big waves on a global scale. And education might well be the key to Jordan’s success. An impressive number of university graduates—one in five, in fact—hold degrees in IT and Engineering, proof of their commitment to building a tech-savvy nation.

With more than 20 VCs operating here, we are host to one of the most efficient ecosystems for entrepreneurship in the region, and open the doors to an Arabic-speaking market of around 400 million potential customers. When we think about the limitless potential Jordan offers to investors, who wouldn’t want to be part of this thrilling tech revolution?

Jordan Source Showcases the Kingdom’s ICT Leadership at EU-Jordan Business Forum’s First Edition

Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II, the forum highlighted local talent and trade opportunities between the EU and Jordan

Jordan Source, a program under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MoDEE), had a leading presence at the first European Union-Jordan Business Forum (EUJBF). Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II, the forum launched its first edition at the Four Seasons Hotel in Amman on 11 June, 2024.

During this event, Jordan Source welcomed policymakers, local entrepreneurs, international investors to its booth, seeking to connect stakeholders from across the globe with the resources they need to grow and thrive in Jordan. In addition, Jordan Source participated in a thematic session under the title of “Connectivity & Digital Investment Sectors”, where the Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, His Excellency Ahmad Hanandeh, delivered an insightful keynote.

In his presentation, the minister recognized Jordanians as true pioneers, shedding light on the nation’s achievement in its journey of firsts. Notably, he emphasized Jordan’s pivotal role in the ICT sector, despite representing only 3% of the MENA population, yet having founded 27 of the region’s top 100 ICT startups. His keynote referenced entities like Maktoub, Jawaker, and Mawdoo3, showcasing the diverse array of companies thriving within Jordan’s vibrant landscape.

Moreover, Hanandeh expressed how this ecosystem has provided fertile ground for foreign enterprises, with tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon and Cisco already reaping the rewards of their investments. He later clarified Jordan Source’s role in bridging between global corporations and the Jordanian market, highlighting the immense potential within Jordan’s talent pool of seasoned experts and spirited youth.

Commenting on this participation, HE Ahmad Hanandeh said, “The launch of the EU-Jordan Business Forum marks another ‘first’ for our country, and we are truly honored to be part of such a historical event. This forum presents a unique opportunity to showcase Jordan’s thriving ICT sector and explore avenues for collaboration with European partners. We at Jordan Source believe in the significance of this dialogue and its role in advancing our mission to position Jordan as a global leader in ICT.”

The event gathered over 160 business organizations and international institutions, providing a platform for participants to explore policy orientations, identify trade and investment opportunities, tackle challenges, and forge strategic partnerships to promote sustainable and inclusive growth in Jordan—through panel discussions, presentations, and networking sessions.

Today, Dinarak is an award-winning organization, serving 400,000 customers, thousands of businesses, government, and humanitarian agencies, with cumulative transaction value exceeding 2 billion dollars, and implementing robust frameworks in consumer and data protection, cyber-security, AML, and Risk management.

Integrated Technology Group (ITG): A Vision for a World Without Hunger with Waqf Thareed

Since 2019, ITG’s innovative regional strategy in Jordan has had a focus on agriculture, technology, and startup accelerators. With Jordan’s agricultural sector undergoing a transformative journey, blending traditional practices with cutting-edge technology to enhance productivity and sustainability, at the forefront of this movement was ITG. Taking an extra step by combining Jordan’s rich agricultural environment with technology has fueled innovation in the region, ITG’s two agricultural projects launched in the same year, the Karamah Jordan Valley medjool date farm and HASSAD, a catalyst for the development of the agricultural sector in Jordan through its innovative startups.

It only makes sense that ITG’s latest project, in a long line of its other charitable efforts, is Waqf Thareed, an endeavour founded in 2023 with a vision towards a world without hunger. Waqf Thareed’s goal is for everyone to have access to balanced healthy meals, fostering a global community thriving in wellness and health. It believes that hunger is unacceptable in today’s world where humanity thrives, and is dedicated to contributing to the solution of this global issue by providing well-balanced meals to those suffering from hunger and malnutrition.

This endowment has launched its Gaza “2” initiative. To deliver 10 million meals after the success of the first initiative Gaza “1” in delivering 1 million full nutritional meals to people in need.
